Me Myself and I

Thoughts on birthdays and holidays.

My mother’s birthday is May 4th. Then right after that comes Mother’s Day. I wish Hallmark had a combo card that covered birthdays occurring around Mother’s day.

My birthday is June 23rd, just after Father’s day usually. Who really cares? I heard Jim Gaffigan (the comedian) describe Father’s day as “government mandated paternal gratitude day” and from my experience, not that many people obey the government. Now there is a new government mandated holiday (‘wish I was a federal employee), Juneteenth which by my calculation should show up between Father’s Day and my birthday. Where’s that been hiding since 1865? My birthday just keeps getting pushed down the list.

Actually, this year I didn’t celebrate my birthday. Instead I celebrated the one year anniversary of pouring my beer into the plastic “tip” cup accidentally handed to me at a national park in Colorado in the middle of a pandemic that had been filled with filthy lucre by a bunch of asymptomatic tourists, and drinking it. It’s a long story, but since I didn’t die I consider me, myself and I inoculated.

You’ve probably figured out that I’m feeling a little frivolous and cheeky.

Normally me myself and I are a serious photographer writing a serious blog.

Not today.

This is my pandemic hair. As you can see, my hair had a little color left before the pandemic. That grey growing out of the top of my head is the last 14 months growth.

I’ve been surveying friends, family and strangers as to whether I should cut it short again. The results have come back an even split, 50-50 for and against. If you have an opinion and would like to express it, I’d love to hear from you in the comment (reply) box below.

I know you are dying to see some more….

Me Myself and I

Thoughts on getting old.

Every day you wake up and you know your body is going to hurt a little. You just don’t know where. It’s like frying bacon naked.

Old guy

I know there is a smart ass dinosaur in my audience somewhere saying 67 isn’t old. It might not be old to you, but it’s beginning to get into my head. When I go in for a check up, the doctor asks me what I had for breakfast, if I’ve fallen lately and if I feel safe at home. When I confronted him about the silly questions he said the questions are mandatory for people my age. Then he said the good news is that if my PSA numbers are good, it’s no longer mandatory to stick his finger up my rear end. Whoo who!

Enough frivolity

My final thought on getting old.

An early morning walk on Main Street Saint Charles.

Patty and I were out early last weekend when this character came peddling by. I want to be like this guy, smiling and happy to be alive. I think he’s one of those guys who would say something like, “Sixty seven isn’t old. It’s just a number”.

Now I feel bad about the dinosaur remark.

It was Henry Ford that once said, “If you think you are or think you are not, you’re right”.

Wow! I just talked me, myself and I out of feeling old.

In closing.

Thank you for sticking with me this whole rant, It’s nice to have friends like you.

As a blogger and philosopher I feel like I should end this with “Three Tips for Not Feeling Old Your Birthday, but I can’t find my AARP magazine right now so I could plagiarize some ideas. For me, I enjoy photo walks with my sweetie, or a bike ride, or a cold beer at my favorite saloon.

Find out what makes you feel younger and get out there and do it.

Your friend,
Mike
